The Doorstep Project

The Doorstep Project was created to share stories from creators around the world, including you!! That's why we tell you to write everyday. We would love to include your work in our podcast, and we'd like to work with you to make this all possible.

This does come with some obstacles, and we work to minimize those to the best of our ability. We know that your work is your work, and we want you to be proud of what you have written.

There are legal bits and pieces to go over before we talk, though....

Legal Bits and Pieces

Your Work Is Yours

You have created something that is intrinsically your own. No one in the world has created what you have, and we have no intention of claiming your work as ours. We love and respect our audience, and the creators in our community. But! Our work is also our own, so we have to cover ourselves a little bit.

The Process

The first thing you'll need to do is read through all of this, because it's very important that you are aware of everything that's going to happen in the process. You'll fill out a Google form with some basic contact information, and confirmation that you understand the terms and conditions of the podcast, and the use of your art. Once you've submitted the form we'll contact you about your story, and you'll submit it through the contact form of the website. After we read it, we'll contact you about the next steps.

Creative Commons License

I thought long and hard about a way to describe this, but the creativecommons.org did it best.

"Creative Commons licenses give everyone from individual creators to large institutions a standardized way to grant the public permission to use their creative work under copyright law. From the reuser’s perspective, the presence of a Creative Commons license on a copyrighted work answers the question, What can I do with this work?"

In other words, a creative commons license will give us free use of your work under a set of specific rules. In this case, we're using the Attribution 4.0 International Creative Commons License, which you can read about here. This gives us free use of your work to be adapted to podcast form, and to be monetized by us, with proper credit to you, without endorsement for your work. (In other words, you're not paying us to put your work up.) This does come with some perceivable downsides...

Pros and Cons

Pros, you have the option to get your amazing work out there for people to listen to, read, and enjoy, while supporting our current and future podcasts. Also, we will be working with you throughout the production and adaptation of your work, so that your vision stays as intact as possible, while adhering to the rules of the production company and making it entertaining in an audio medium. An additional pro we will always provide; if, at any point during or after production, you decide you no longer want your work to be on the podcast and website, you can let us know and the episode will be taken down, no questions asked. Your work is your work, and we respect that.

Cons, this license does not and cannot be limited to a singular person or company. This means that once your project is under the Attribution 4.0 International Creative Commons License, anyone can use your work as long as they follow the rules of the license assigned to it. That means you'll still get credit, but there's no way you could be paid for your work with this particular piece of art you've created. It also means it has to be posted under this license before it is used in the podcast. We do have multiple options for you depending on your situation, which we can discuss with you. And you can ask us any questions before you fill out the form, or send any creative project to us.

Importantly, you cannot revoke the Creative Commons License at any time, but you can stop distributing your product. That does not effect any projects that have already used your work. They will still have a legal right to the content they've posted and created using your work, as long as they posted it before you removed your work and they follow the rules of the license you've put your work under. (I've done my research, but if you information I don't, give me a shout!)

So Basically...

As we've reiterated multiple times, your work is your work and we won't do anything with your work without your permission. That does mean we have the right to refuse to publish your work under our name. There are some legal things we can walk you through if you have any questions, or you can find all the basic information here, and the legal jargon here.

The Goal

The goal of The Doorstep Project is to showcase stories and art from the community for free, always for free. We want to work with the creators, for the creators, so we can have a safe space to listen and share. Our story, your story, and every story in between.
